The three-wing drag bit is a water drilling tool designed for soft to medium formations such as sand, clay, and shale. Made from alloy steel in a single cast structure with tungsten carbide cutting tips and gauge sides, this bit is resistant to shearing or breaking when encountering harder rock layers, which extends its service life. The three-wing design improves the rate of penetration (ROP) and produces larger drill cuttings, making it more efficient in soft formations. It is best suited for rotary speeds of 60–80 rpm with a lighter bit weight.
Applications and Configurations
Three-wing drag bits are widely used in petroleum drilling, particularly in the upper soft layers. They are available in two-wing, three-wing, and four-wing designs, with the three-wing scraper bit being the most commonly used.
