Mini Excavator

What Is Mini Excavator

A mini excavator is a tracked or wheeled vehicle with an approximate operating weight from 0.7 to 8.5 tonnes. It generally includes a standard backfill blade and features independent boom swing. Hydraulic excavators are somewhat different from other construction equipment in that all movement and functions of the machine are accomplished through the transfer of hydraulic fluid. The compact excavator's work group and blade are activated by hydraulic fluid acting upon hydraulic cylinders. The excavator's slew (rotation) and travel functions are also activated by hydraulic fluid powering hydraulic motors.

Advantages of Mini Excavator

Less impact

Because they are smaller and lighter, mini excavators leave reduced track marks and cause less ground damage.

Smaller footprint

Compact mini excavators are easier to work with when a work site is small or crowded, like a parking lot.

Easy transport

Mini excavators can be loaded onto the back of a utility truck or relatively small trailer for simple transfer between job sites.

Low transportation weight

Several mini excavator models have an operating weight of less than 10,000 lbs., which means you may be able to trailer and tow a mini excavator with a standard driver’ s license.

Structure of Mini Excavator

1

House
The house structure contains the operator's compartment, engine compartment, hydraulic pump and distribution components. The house structure is attached to the top of the undercarriage via a swing bearing. The house, along with the workgroup, is able to rotate or slew upon the undercarriage without limit due to a hydraulic distribution valve which supplies oil to the undercarriage components.

2

Slew
Slewing refers to rotating the excavator's house assembly. Unlike a conventional backhoe, the operator can slew the entire house and workgroup upon the undercarriage for spoil placement.

3

Undercarriage
The undercarriage consists of rubber or steel tracks, drive sprockets, rollers, idlers and associated components/structures. The undercarriage supports the house structure and the workgroup.

4

Workgroup
The workgroup of a compact hydraulic excavator consists of the boom, dipper or arm, and attachment (e.g. auger, bucket or breaker). It is connected to the front of the excavator's house structure via a swing frame that allows the workgroup to be hydraulically pivoted left or right to achieve offset digging for trenching parallel with the tracks. Certain manufacturers offer an extendable boom option, much like the extendable boom of a backhoe loader.

5

Independent boom swing
The primary purpose of boom swing is for offset digging around obstacles or along foundations, walls or forms. A secondary use is cycling in areas too narrow for cab rotation. Independent boom swing is one of the major advantages of a compact excavator over other excavation equipment.

6

Backfill blade
The backfill blade is used for grading, leveling, backfilling, trenching, and general dozer work. The blade can be used to increase dump height and digging depth depending on its position in relation to the excavator's workgroup, this makes it very versatile. It is also used to stabilize the machine while digging.

Applications of Mini excavator

Installing pools and hot tubs

Mini excavators are the perfect solution for digging out in-ground pools or hot tubs, even in the smallest of backyards. The machine’ s maneuverability and power, coupled with precision handling, make it a go-to for residential earthworks.

Repairing sewer lines

Mini excavators allow operators to efficiently move dirt when repairing sewer lines, as well as fit in tight spots near structures. After the repair is completed, they be used to level the yard using an attachment such as a dozer blade.

Tree installation/removal

A mini excavator can make quick work of digging holes for tree transplants, and then backfill over the root ball. With the right attachments it can remove even larger trees. A thumb grapple attachment is handy for digging up stumps.

Demolishing small structures

Barns, sheds, or other structures can all be taken down using a mini excavator. The machine can also be used to load debris onto the back of a trailer for disposal.

Drilling for posts, drainage or landscaping

Using an auger attachment, mini excavators can easily drill deep into soil or concrete for installing fence posts, road signage or trees.

Most Common Mini Excavator Sizes

Less than 1-ton mini excavator (800-1,999 lbs)
A few excavators weigh in at less than a ton, and they can be a great tool for smaller projects. Their compact design makes them easy to maneuver and operate — even in confined spaces. Their limited dimensions make them the ideal machine for a homeowner working on a do-it-yourself landscaping project.

1- to 2-ton mini excavator (2,000-4,000 lbs)
Mini excavators that weigh between one and two tons are still relatively compact, but they come with some additional power and digging capacity. Most brands have mini excavators in this size, and, for many, it’s the smallest size they offer.

3- to 5-ton mini excavator (6,000-10,000 lbs)
While this size of mini excavator remains fairly compact, they offer more power and functionality. Typical jobs for this size excavator are trenching, digging foundations and overall job site preparation. An excavator of this size can dig trenches between eight and 12 feet — great for contractors who work on pipe or cable installation. The additional power behind this excavator is suitable for digging foundations suitable for homes and other non-commercial structures.

6- to 10-ton mini excavator (12,000-20,000 lbs)
This is the largest size class of excavator you’ d still consider compact. If you’ re looking for the most power and digging capacity that still fits within a confined work area, consider a larger excavator from this range. Mini excavators with an operating weight of six to 10 tons can dig up to 15 feet deep, but check the model’ s specifications to ensure it fits all your digging needs. Typical jobs for a mini excavator include trenching and backfilling. You can also use this size of mini excavator to dig foundations for homes and smaller commercial buildings.

Tips for Mini Excavator Maintenance

Train your operators effectively
Implementing an efficient preventative maintenance program begins with training machine operators effectively. Your mini excavator operators can only spot potential problems with their machines if they have been trained under normal operating conditions. It’s vital to train heavy equipment operators in maintenance procedures. Operators should be able to identify engine and exhaust issues, loose bolts, frayed belts, missing parts and filters in need of replacing. Taking the time to train workers and ensure they can recognize the thousands of components in a mini excavator can save costly repairs in the future.

Follow a routine maintenance schedule
Following a compact excavator, maintenance schedule simplifies the maintenance process and ensures that workers know their machine’s condition. To create a maintenance schedule, check your mini excavator maintenance manual. The maintenance manual includes service recommendations on how frequently to review everything from fluid levels to track tension.

Xamine the hydraulic cylinders
A daily pre-operation walkaround is one of the most effective ways to maintain your mini-excavator and prevent accidents on the job site. Taking the time to walk around your equipment and inspect it before each use reduces the chance that you’ll miss a loose bolt or frayed connection.

Inspect the attachment
The next step in your excavator walkaround is to inspect the attachment itself. Checking the attachment and coupler for signs of disrepair helps prevent accidents and may ultimately reduce maintenance costs for your mini excavators. If the attachment or arm shows any rust or other damage, replace the component to relieve any stress on the mini excavator’s arm.

Open the side hood
Walk around to the side hood and open it to inspect what’s inside. Examine the hydraulic tank, tubes, hoses, and plugs. Look for leaks and breakage. Then check the hydraulic fittings and connecting joints. If there are signs of leakage, correct the issues.

Inspect the fuel water separator
Examine the fuel water separator for any trace of water in your mini excavator’s fuel. Depending on your mini excavator model, your machine may have a fuel water separator with a clear bowl containing a red ring. If the ring floats, there is water in the fuel. Completing this maintenance step catches potentially damaging leaks in your fuel filter.

Check the cooling system
While inspecting the inside of the side hood, check the cooling system. Look for leaks in the system, faulty hoses, and any buildup of trash and debris. Remove debris if it’s present and repair leaks. Then examine coolant levels. Always ensure the coolant meets the manufacturer’s recommended levels.

Grease pivot points
Greasing your mini excavator’s pivot points is one of the most cost-effective maintenance tips you can implement. Daily greasing of the arm, bucket, and other pivot points ensures that the mini excavator runs properly. Daily greasing also prevents the pins from wearing out prematurely.

Examine the engine compartment
After inspecting everything in the side hood and greasing the pivot points, move around to the engine compartment and lift the hood. First, check for and remove debris from the inside. Then examine the oil cap and tighten it if needed. Inspect all the belts for the engine attachments. Replace any belts that are frayed, worn, or broken.

Check fuel levels
The next step in your maintenance list is to check fuel levels. Engine and hydraulic oil should always be at the recommended level. Operating a mini excavator on insufficient fuel could result in costly damages, so this stage is essential. Check the maintenance manual for the manufacturer’s recommended fuel levels. Then examine the fuel levels and replace the oil when needed.
