Mini Forklift

What Is Mini Forklift

A mini forklift is any type of small forklift. These machines range from very small desk-sized toy models to the functional "narrow aisle" forklifts used in industry. Mini forklift manufacturers usually mimic the look and functionality of a full-sized forklift. Forklift capacity is the measurement of how much weight a particular forklift can lift. Lower capacities begin around 3,000 lbs. and can go up to over 50,000 lbs.

Advantages of Mini Forklift

Efficient
Mini forklifts are vastly more efficient than manual labor. They can be used in different environments, from indoor to outdoor settings making them efficient for different operations. Their efficiency can also be seen in their ability to accommodate different environments, and weights, and to work for longer hours.

Lift heavy weights
Mini forklifts can lift much greater weights than humans/manual labor. They are designed to lift, move and transport heavy loads with ease, saving time and effort. This heavy load would otherwise require several people to move. In fact, the highest capacity mini forklifts can lift well over 125,000 lbs.

Highly customizable
Mini forklifts are highly versatile material handling equipment. They can be used for many purposes, in many industries, and they have lots of models and designs, attachment types, tires, and other options available. This versatility allows them to be operated in different environments and for different needs.

Improved safety
Before mini forklifts, many factories and warehouses used pulleys and cables to move heavy materials and weighted objects. These methods had an increased risk of danger as the loads could easily cause too much tension in the cabling (causing it to snap) and could also land on employees below if not correctly fastened. Mini forklifts have helped improve the safety of workers in various operations.

5T Forklift

Climb into the mini forklift and buckle the seatbelt
Board the mini forklift from the left side. Grab the handhold near the front of the cab with one hand and the back of the seat with your other. Put your foot on the step and lift yourself up into the seat. Once you’ re sitting down, buckle your seatbelt so you’ re safe. Never grab the steering wheel while you’re pulling yourself into the cab. If you’ re in a standing mini forklift, make sure to put on the safety harnesses once you’ re inside.

Turn the key to start the mini forklift
Find the shifter lever under the left side of the steering wheel. Make sure the lever is in the center position so it’ s in neutral. Locate the emergency brake lever on the left side of the machine and make sure it’ s pulled down and activated. Put the key into the ignition on the right side of the steering column and turn it forward to start the mini forklift’s engine.

Lift the fork up by 2–4 in (5.1–10.2 cm) with the control levers
Your mini forklift should either have 1 or 2 black levers that control the height and tilt of the fork located to the right of the steering wheel. Pull the lever to raise the fork’s 2 tines off the ground by 2–4 in (5.1–10.2 cm) so they don’ t scrape the ground while you’ re driving. If you want, you can also tilt the tines backward to raise them even further. Each mini forklift operates differently, so look at the mini forklift manual before operating any of the levers so you know exactly what they do.

Depress the brake pedal on the left of the accelerator pedal before releasing the emergency brake
Press the brake pedal with your right foot before pushing the lever for the parking brake forward. Keep your foot on the brake pedal or else the machine may move. Make sure nobody is on either side of you within 10 feet (3.0 m) when you start driving.

Use the shifter to change the direction you’ re driving
Push the shifter forward to drive or pull it back if you want to go in reverse. Keep your foot on the brake pedal while you shift so you don’ t move around. Whenever you are stopped, put the shifter back into the middle position to change it into neutral.

Press on the accelerator to move
The accelerator is located beneath the steering wheel on your right, just like the inside of a car. Lightly press on the accelerator with your right foot to start moving. Maintain a slow speed at first until you’ re used to handling the machine. If you’re driving in reverse, make sure to always look behind you so you know where you’ re going. Some mini forklifts have a forward and reverse pedal. Check the machine’ s manual to check what type of mini forklift you’ re driving.

Honk your horn when passing through busy areas
The button for your horn should be in the center of your steering wheel, similar to a car horn. If you’ re driving in a tight area with frequent traffic, use the horn so others know that you’ re passing by. Honk the horn whenever you come to an intersection. That way, people who are crossing will know that you’ re coming.

Turn the steering wheel in the direction you want to go while you’ re driving
Grab the knob on top of the steering wheel to control it better. Spin the wheel in the direction you want to turn. When you want to make a turn at a sharp angle, wait until the back of the tines reaches the corner before starting your turn.

Basic Mini Forklift Controls

Hydraulic lift knobs
These knobs control how the forks are used when lifting, lowering and carrying loads. One knob lifts the forks up or down. Another one tilts the forks up or down at a slight angle. This is used to load the pallets more securely. The third knob is used to move the load from side to side. Some mini forklifts come with a knob that allows the operator to vary the width of the forks. Not all hydraulic mini forklift operation is the same some have levers, some have actuators, newer models are always evolving. Regardless of how the hydraulics are controlled, always inspect the controls before starting a job.

Mast tilt
In addition to raising and lowering the forks, hydraulics also allow the operator to tilt the mast. This can prevent loads from slipping off the forks by compensating for their tendency to angle the forks downward. Tilt can also help when operating a mini forklift on ground that isn’ t level.

Directional controls
Unlike cars, mini forklifts only have three gears: forward, reverse and neutral. These controls can be mounted on the steering column or operated by foot. Foot control is done by shifting the accelerator pedal from side to side.

Accelerator pedal
This performs the same function as the gas pedal on a car. Press down and the speed and acceleration increase. Take the pressure off and they decrease.

Brake pedal

This, too, works just like a car. Press down to slow or stop the mini forklift. Lifting your foot off the pedal allows the truck to begin moving again.

Clutch pedal

Some internal combustion (fossil fuel) mini forklifts come with a clutch pedal, which is part of the mini forklift speed control system. This pedal allows the operator to accelerate more by shifting into a higher gear. These mini forklifts are typically used in outdoor work sites with rough or difficult terrain.

Inching pedal

You won’ t find this pedal in a car. In a mini forklift, it is used to make very slow, small movements to position the truck for lifting. It is also used to maneuver safely in narrow aisles and tight spaces. The pedal is usually operated by the left foot.

Parking brake

As the name implies, the parking brake holds the mini forklift in place when it is not being driven. When parking the truck on an incline, always engage the parking brake and block the wheel.

Mini Forklift Maintenance Best Practices

Follow the manufacturer's service schedule
This is typically every 90 days or 100 hours. Keeping parts regularly serviced and updated helps keep small issues from turning into bigger (and likely more-expensive) problems.

Complete a daily operator checklist
Have your operators check basic parts and ensure everything is in working order before they begin using a mini forklift. By utilizing operator management tools, mini forklift checklist questions can be customized, including conditional questions, to suit the specific needs of your business. Completed mini forklift operator checklist forms are stored in the system, creating an electronic ‘paper trail’ to meet regulatory requirements for the recording of mini forklift checklist forms.

Keep dirt and debris at bay
This process should include blowing out the radiator, wiping down any dirty elements of the mini forklift and changing any filters that have become dirty. Checking on this regularly will help keep your mini forklift in top working order for many years.

Check hydraulic hoses

Hydraulic hoses can crack, split or weep, causing equipment break down when levels drop too low. Replace any damaged hoses at the first sign of stress.

Watch for tire wear

Replace tires when you see chunking, cracking or flat spots on your tires. For optimal performance, make certain your mini forklift wheels and tires are the proper fit for your intended use.

Charge batteries on a schedule

Setting up a charging routine helps extend battery life. The general rule of thumb is to recharge the battery after an eight-hour shift or when it’ s discharged more than 30%.

How a Mini Forklift Works

The lift handle is attached to an electrical air pump at the base of the mini forklift. Once the handle is pressed, it triggers the air pump that draws the outside air through a filter and forces it into a tube reaching to the hydraulic cylinders. A hydraulic cylinder comprise of a hollow tube closed at one end with a flexible lubricated piston fitting into the other. Air gets entrapped through the base of the cylinder that allows gasses to enter without leaking them out. The volume of gas in the cylinder raises the pressure inside it. The pressure applied to the area of the piston head generates an upward force. This force causes the piston to move up, increasing the volume of the gas and minimizing the pressure. It creates physical equilibrium at the mini forklift height and an equivalent force from the gas and the mini forklift’ s load.

The hydraulic pistons are attached to the two main vertical structures known as ‘masts’. Forks that are meant to carry the load are attached to the main body of the mini forklift by a pair of roller chain pulleys whose fulcrum forms a gear at the top of the mast. Hence, when the hydraulic pistons push the masts in upward direction, the gears on the masts is pressed against the roller chains. It happens because the one side of the chain is fixed to the immovable frame of the mini forklift, and the only way by which masts can move upward is when gears rotate in clockwise direction and pull the forks overhead. The significance of this mechanism is that it let the forks go far away from the reach of the cylinders. If it is not meant for roller chain pulleys then mini forklifts would require much taller cylinders to lift up the load to an equivalent height. The steering control works similar to those of a golf cart, having acceleration pedal, steering wheel, brake, reverse gear and forward gear. Mini forklifts use rear wheel steering. When you turn on the steering wheel, the wheel at the rear axle starts to turn back and forth. This is intentionally designed to allow operator to take greater degree of rotation and precision while handling a cargo.

The lifting control comprises two levers: One for lifting the fork up & down and other for tilting the load back & forth. Lifting control work same as lifting mechanism discussed above. The tilting mechanism is somewhat different. There are two pairs of additional hydraulic cylinders attached to the base of the masts. Once the tilt handle is moved in forward direction, the air automatically fills up the chamber. The rise in pressure is enough to push the head of the piston and let the masts go away from the vehicle’ s body. Once the tilt handle is moved back, the air gently passes away from the cylinder and get pumped to other part of the mast-attached cylinders. When the pistons are pushed forward, the masts are pushed back to the vehicle.
